âI knew that was you two I saw on the road,â Vincent said as he closed the limited space between them without lowering his weapon. Before Faith had time to react, Vincent snatched the gun from her hand and then pointed his at her head. âToss that weapon over to me now,â he told Eli. âBefore I shoot her right where sheâs standing.â
âDonât do it, Eli,â Faith warned. If Eli gave up his weapon, theyâd be completely defenseless, and she was positive Vincent planned to kill them.
Vincent fired a shot above her head. âNext one wonât miss.â
Eli slowly tossed the gun at Vincentâs feet. Faith edged closer to him and reached for his hand. He made her feel safe, and she believed after everything theyâd been throughâthe things that happened in New YorkâGott wouldnât let them die like this.
While keeping a close eye on them, Vincent picked up both weapons and hurled them into the underbrush.
With the gun still trained on them, Vincent moved closer. A triumphant grin played across his face. âThis could have been avoided if youâd kept what Blake told you to yourself. Instead, you had to blab it to Cheryl. Now this guy and that old woman. Look whatâs happened because you couldnât keep your mouth shut.â He waved the gun in her face and winced. Vincent appeared to be favoring his injured shoulder. Their only chance at getting through this would be finding a way to disarm Vincent.
âLetâs go!â he barked and they jumped. âYouâre both coming with me.â
Vincent pointed toward the road. âGet going!â His expression twisted into rage when they hesitated. He shoved Eliâs injured arm, and Eli bit back his reaction to the pain. âGo.â Faith started toward Eli, but Vincent grabbed her by the arm and hauled her along with him toward the truck.
If they got into that vehicle with Vincent, theyâd be dead. Heâd probably take them somewhere off the community and shoot them. Maybe into the mountains where heâd leave their bodies for the animals to dispose of. Faith couldnât let that happen. Eli was right. She had to tell Cherylâs story. To do so, she had to survive.
Vincent dragged her along beside him, then crossed the road and headed for the truck.
The closer they came to their fate, the more frantic she became. âI made copies of all the evidence Blake gathered. If I go missing, itâll be sent to someone with enough authority to bring down you and the rest of your dirty cop friends along with Ghost.â
Vincent jerked her to face him. âYouâre bluffing. You have nothing. And my wifeâs body is still in your house. You fled the scene of a murder.â
His eyes narrowed as he watched her. âThat really doesnât look good for you. Iâll tell them I was forced to kill you both in self-defense. And the old lady wonât be of much help. I know where she lives. Iâll make sure sheâs taken care of next.â
Faith tried not to take the bait no matter how hard it was.
